Hello!
I’m Martin Dougherty, an RIBA Chartered Architect based in the beautiful town of Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
Working with an architect shouldn’t be complicated or frustrating. I work closely with my clients, offering bespoke services without any fuss. As a chartered member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) with years of experience, I can advise on design, produce the technical drawings, help with planning applications, oversee the construction on site and support the official aspects of your project from start to finish. Whether you need me for every step, from planning to completion or just for certain stages, I'm here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve put together some of the questions I’m often asked. If this section doesn’t have the information you need, please get in touch. Remember, there is no such thing as a daft question.

Do I Need an Architect?
There are many people who help those looking to build or renovate. Each has their own skillset.
As a charted architect, I have min 7 years of training, professional qualifications, am licenced and have legal responsibilities to maintain and follow under the ARB Code of Conduct.
Choosing, for example, an architectural designer is someone with a different set of skills and knowledge, but they can’t offer the same services or guarantees.

What Areas Do You Cover?
I’m based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, but I consult on or work directly with clients on projects all over North Yorkshire and the North East. If you’re a bit further away, I may be able to help or refer you to someone who can.

‘Ow Much? (How Much Does an Architect Charge)
How much does it cost to work with an architect? It depends on what you want. Because each project is very different, I offer bespoke pricing. This means that I offer a no-obligation quote specific to your needs. Any kind of building project comes with various costs, from planning applications to paying contractors and materials. Part of my job is helping my clients create a budget and manage the build to ensure the budget is adhered to.

What’s the Difference Between an Architect and an Architectural Designer?
A qualified Architect and an “Architectural Designer” are very different. The main differences lie in qualifications, licensing, and the legal responsibilities associated with the title "architect." As a qualified chartered architect, I have legal obligations and duties to you and those involved in the build. These include the quality of the service I provide, your safety, compliance, and much more. An architectural designer is not qualified and, therefore, can’t offer the same services.
‘MPD Architect Ltd was recommended to us which is always a good starting point. From the initial telephone conversation to discussion in person Martin was excellent to deal with. He listened to our ideas and then turned them into effective concepts, always being mindful of our requirements and doing all he could to make them work. We would have no hesitation recommending this practice or using him again in the future’.
